Opening up professions: How to connect accountancy to society
Professionals fields like accountancy, the medical field, lawyers, and engineers used to be ‘closed off’, at a distance from the rest of society, ‘ivory towers’, and untouchable. They regulated themselves, by way of strict standards that determined how they could operate effectively and legitimately. Times have changed. Societies, i.e., clients and all kinds of stakeholders exert pressure. Backed by errors, failure and scandals, stakeholders might criticize how professionals work and they might lose faith in specific professions. Within professional fields, professional members might also distance themselves from how things are going. In the field of accounting and auditing such critical stances have become widespread, mainly due to specific accounting and auditing scandals. This stimulates the field to reconfigure its professional actions, or it stimulates governments to enforce change. This will mean that accounting and auditing are connected to the public and the public good. Backed by a commissioned research project (Overmans & Noordegraaf, 2019, ‘Aanwezig maar niet allesbepalend: Acties en invloed van big-4 accountants bij de ontwikkeling van accountancy standaarden’), Mirko Noordegraaf will argue that these connections can be made in multiple ways. In addition, he will show that such ‘connective potential’ is not used widely, and he will explain why. This is relevant for the accountancy field, but also sheds light on how other fields might connect professional practices to society (or not).

Prof. Mirko Noordegraaf is Professor of Public Management at Utrecht University, and also Vice Dean of Social Impact at the Faculty of Law, Economics, Governance & Organization (REBO) of Utrecht University, and he is Extraordinary Professor of Governance & Public Services at the University of Aruba (UA). His academic work is in the realm of professional public service. Mirko is leading the international debate on the “reconfiguration of public professionalism,” but finds that that debate is rather context-free. Or more specifically, it assumes a model of public service in large Western countries. Other contexts, such as small island state contexts, are ignored. Mirko wants to address or expose this in part through his involvement at UA. His research focuses on the experiences, knowledge, and insights of directors, managers, and professionals. He handles these confidentially and with care.
Jonah Warner MSc RA, is currently a Senior Manager in the Assurance practice of Ernst & Young (EY) serving a wide-array of clients in various industries across the Dutch Caribbean. At the start of his career, back in 2011, Jonah joined the EY Eindhoven office in the Netherlands serving several Multinational Corporations and Public Interest Entities. In 2014, he returned to Aruba, joining the EY Aruba office. Besides his daily tasks as an Assurance Senior Manager, he is also a member of the EY Caribbean Quality Network and EY Digital Advisors Network. As of 2022, he also serves on the board of the Aruban Association of Auditors. Jonah is a very ambitious person. He believes in continued growth and development and attributes his success to being determined, disciplined, modest, and having a healthy-level of boredom.
