Working together towards developing an early intervention system in Aruba

he Plataforma Intervencion Trempan Aruba (PITA) seeks to ensure that all children in Aruba, including those with disabilities, will be healthy, accepted by society, included in the community, and experience well-being. The Stakeholder Summit in 2021 resulted in a 3-year National Action Plan, contained in the report: Early Intervention System for Aruba National Action Plan (children 0-4 years). The stakeholders crafted sixteen long-term goals, twelve short-term goals, and over 30 related activities. The National Action Plan is ambitious and will require a sustained effort by the PITA member organizations.

The Stakeholder Summit, and the establishment of PITA are significant steps toward establishing an early intervention system in Aruba. It is evident that many of the elements that are needed for the system are in place and through collaboration, stakeholders will be able to make advancements in early intervention through child assessments, expanding services, creating additional resources, and instituting regulations.

Dr. Kelly Hantak is here on the island to evaluate and fine tune the early intervention system progress, which requires feedback and input of all stakeholders. The goal is to create a system that will work for Aruba, striving toward a vision that “all children in Aruba are screened and diagnosed for developmental disabilities and receive appropriate services” .

Speakers

Mieke de Droog is Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science, and Program Director of the Aruba Institute of Good Governance & Leadership at the University of Aruba. She holds a PhD in public administration and organizational sciences. Her research interests are in organizing quality in Small Island States, with a focus on wellbeing, inclusion, enhancement of public services, collaboration, and sustainability.

Dr. Hantak is a Senior Research Associate at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Institute for Human Development. She serves as a Project Coordinator for research projects examining early intervention systems, early childhood workforce development, and kindergarten readiness for children with visual impairments. Dr. Hantak holds a Doctor of Education in Instructional Leadership with a specialization in Andragogy, Master’s degrees in education with a specialization in Early Childhood Education and Behavior Analysis, and a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Disorders. She has served as an early interventionist, early childhood special education teacher, program coordinator, behavior analyst, and higher education faculty.

Anouk Eman, graduated from Lindenwood University with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Early Intervention in Autism & Sensory impairments. Miss Eman serves as an Early Intervention Specialist at “Departamento di Mucha y Hoben” (DMH) I.O. and working towards developing an early intervention system for children birth through four years and their families across Aruba.
