Who are we?
M.A.G.E.C. (Making Aruba a Greener Environment Club) is a non-profit organization that strives for a greener world and a greener Aruba. The club was founded in early December 2017 by an Academic Foundation Year (AFY) student and was supported by Tobia de Scisciolo.
Mission
- Bring climate change awareness to the people of Aruba,
- Educate the people of Aruba on the reduction of plastic use,
- Teach the children how to live a more sustainable life,
- Inspire other islands to realize their environmental impact and make reforms,
- Educate the people of Aruba to invest in renewable energy,
- Educate the people on how to become more sustainable.
M.A.G.E.C. does this by organizing different projects. M.A.G.E.C. also collaborates with other organizations that are striving for the same goal. As a team, we come up with several different projects to make Aruba greener in a fun interactive way.
Projects
Since our launch:
- We have organized a successful coastal cleanup at Dunes beach, where we collected over 200 kilograms of waste.
- We volunteered for Plastic Beach Party during the carnival period asking the public to participate in recycling their plastic used during the parades. Approximately 70 kavels participated in this project.
- We helped AHATA with their campamento project 2018 that brought awareness to the campers to keep their campsite clean. The members of MAGEC helped by asking the campers for their participation in this project and we also got the opportunity to be a part of the examiners for the competition.
- We were granted the opportunity to have a MAGEC representative on the AHATA’s Environmental Committee.
- We volunteered for Aruba Doet in collaboration with the University of Aruba, where we created an edible garden for St. Dominicus College Elementary School.
Our biggest project to date has been our recycling project at the University of Aruba. While working with Plastic Beach Party we were introduced to the process of recycling plastic. Because of this MAGEC thought of the idea to implement plastic recycling bins on the campus of the University of Aruba. With our recycling bins now installed on campus, we aim to engage University students in being more sustainable by getting them to recycle their plastic.
