Refugees’ Rights in Aruba part 4: Human Library

General
According to the recent numbers of the UNHCR an estimated 17,000 Venezuelan refugees and migrants are residing in Aruba. This is just a little under 20% of the entire Aruban population. Despite their undeniable presence and contribution to the Aruban society national support systems continue to disregard these groups. Coupled with a lack of a legal residence status, refugees and illegal migrants are disproportionately exposed to abuse, exploitation and detention.

To increase public awareness and actively engage students at the University of Aruba as well as the broader public on this topic the Center for Life Learning, will be hosting a series of webinars on the rights of refugees on Aruba. The aim of this webinar series is to generate a better understanding of the social, legal and political Aruban contexts as they relate to refugees and migrant, to create a platform for exchanging ideas and expertise on how to address challenges and to facilitate interaction between refugees and the local population.

The previous webinars were a panel discussion on providing the legal, social and political contexts of the refugee crisis in Aruba and presentations on the role and impact of civil society organizations in mitigating the refugee crisis in Aruba.

The fourth webinar
The fourth webinar of this web series will take the form of a ‘Human Library’ which will be held on December 9th from 14.00- 16.00 local time. This session aims to create a safe space to exchange personal stories and encourage greater mutual understanding between refugee communities, UA community and the general public. Refugees from Latin-America, residing in the Caribbean, and refugees from the Middle East, residing in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, will share their stories, their reasons for leaving their home countries and their experiences in integrating in a foreign country.

Human Rights Day
As the 10th of December will mark Human Rights Day, this webinar series will close off with a live streamed reflective discussion on human rights in practice. During this discussion human rights educators and UA alumni will discuss pending human rights issues in Aruba, including those that relate to refugees and (undocumented) migrants.
