Symposium: Climate Change
The adverse effects of global climate change pose a serious threat to the security of small island nations and their people. Aruba is no exception to this. For Aruba, the wider societal implications of changing climatological patterns are non-discriminatory and cross-sectoral. Particular risk is induced for natural ecosystems and resources at the heart of Aruba’s tourism industry. To date, this industry remains central to Aruba’s economic model. It is imperative that Aruba has to strengthen its resilience to climate change.
The objective of this symposium is to address Aruba’s response to climate change and to increase awareness for climate change mitigation and adaptation within the local policy context. Attention is dedicated to the position of Aruba as a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and as an EU Overseas Country & Territory (OCT), in relation to international law, global climate treaties as well as access to global climate finance.
