Debunking Leadership Myths: What the unlikely case of the EU can teach us

The lecture will address the question ‘what makes for good leadership’? A topic relevant not only in politics – our speaker’s domain of expertise – but for every public and private organisation. Using topical and historical examples from world politics, five common leadership myths are discussed. Finally, we will take a look at the leadership of the European Union (EU). Given the dispersion of power and persistent conflicts of interests amongst the central actors in the European political arena, the EU is an unlikely case for illustrating successful leadership. However, our speaker will argue that it is precisely because of these features that the EU can teach us valuable lessons about what leadership is really about.
