Course information:
The master course on International Criminal Law at the University of Aruba is a dynamic program that explores the principles and applications of international criminal law. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of crimes with global implications, including genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Through lectures, seminars, and interactive discussions, students examine legal frameworks, landmark cases, and the role of international institutions in enforcing international criminal law. The course fosters critical thinking and analytical skills, enabling students to assess complex legal issues and develop a solid foundation in this important field.
Didactic concept:
Teaching will take place in accordance with the didactic concept of the Law Faculty: Student Centered Learning. During the tutorials
different topics will be discussed on the basis of the prescribed readings. A thorough preparation of the tutorials is necessary to be able partake in the teaching sessions.
Learning objectives:
The aim of the course is for Master students to get acquainted with the position and special character of international (and interregional) criminal law. At the end of this course the student will be able to independently recognize and address current issues as well as solve cases regarding ICL.
About the lecturer:
Ruth Bonnevalle-Kok conducted her PhD research on international criminal law. She worked at the Dutch judiciary (district court and Supreme Court) and Ministry of Justice in the area of ICL. She joined the University of Aruba in 2017as Associate Professor and is Dean of the Faculty of Law since 2020-2021.
Dates, eligibility and application
Course and examination dates
The course will be provided over a period of 7 weeks starting from August 28 – October 13, 2023 (block 1.1).
The lectures will be provided twice a week between 14.00 – 16.00 hours on-site. The course will also include a visit to the Coast Guard in Savaneta.
This course will be completed with an on site written exam in the exam week of October 16-20 , 2023.
Eligibility
- Candidates with at least an Applied legal or University BA diploma;
- Command of the English language
- Interest in international criminal law!
