Are you ready for a conversation?

Aim:
We aim for the student at the end of the course to:

– Be able to communicate in Papiamento about daily and semiprofessional activities, on a basic level, so he can express himself in the local language.
– Experience the pleasure of the ability to communicate in different situations and embrace the possibilities of the use of Papiamento.
– Appreciate the culture and language of the country of Aruba and integrate in the Aruban community.

Target Group (Universidad di Aruba/ University of Aruba)
English and Dutch speaking students (including expats) and have a minimal mastery of Papiamento and consider Papiamento a foreign language.

Method:
– Each class will be introduced with a text/song/poem, etc.
– The topics discussed during class include amongst others; culture, the home, school, work and social interactions.
– The emphasis will be on the use of vocabulary within a specific context.
– Phrase structure and orthography will also be offered.
– More attention will be put on oral language (listening and speaking) than solely reading and writing.

In practice:
– Classes will be given in Papiamento supported by English and Dutch;
– Visualization, mimicry and TPR (Total Physical Response) will be often applied;
– Recordings of songs, poems, stories, conversation, interviews will be used;
– Newspapers in Papiamento will be part of the material provided;
– There will a lot of interaction and group work;
– Topics will be related to recent events;
– Dramatization and dialogues will be part of the classes.
