Poetry recitals of the International Poetry Encounter Aruba
Panel discussion on translation, poetry, publishing
Description
Our dual event–a Monday evening reading on May 15th and a daytime workshop on the 16th–happens in the second week of our international poetry encounter on Aruba. We explore questions about the relevance of literary translation and comparative world literature for the future of Papiamento. Our evening-reading at the UA campus summons international poets from Brazil, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Aruba and Peru. We will start with an interview of Brazilian Portuñol-language poet, translator, and professor Wilson Alves-Bezerras from Sao Paolo. Wilson also explores the historical relationship between rap and poetry, asking “What went lost? Is there a missing link?” We will also be joined by: Marta Jazmín of Puerto Rico; Venezuelan poet-translator Jesús Montoya and members of the literary translation center Casa Looren and more special guests from Latin America and the Andes. Poets recite from their work and participate in Q&As about the literary situations in their respective societies vis a vis ours. Our workshop event investigates the challenges of multi-lingual poetry translation and publishing/edition. We welcome the novices, the new and experienced, the curious visitors. *Event co-directed by Arturo Desimone and Basha Foundation with backing from the Prins Berhard Caribbean Culture Fund and Casa Looren.
Facilitators
Wilson Alves Bezerras (1977) is a Brazilian poet and professor specialized in literary translation and in the Portuñol creole language. He will be joined by poets from Venezuela, Peru and Puerto Rico. We will be joined by other poets at the festival such as Juana Adcock (Monterrey Mexico 1982) and Marta Jazmín (Puerto Rico, 1983) to recite their poems, to talk about the importance of comparative literature and the art of translation
