Shadow economies and informal employment around the world
The informal economy, also known as the shadow economy, can cause severe damage to the official economy and have negative consequences for tax revenues. The pandemic caused an unprecedented shock to economies worldwide, and to the Aruban economy in particular, leading to a sharp increase in debt-to-GDP ratio. A thorough understanding of the informal economy and policy options to tackle it, is essential to limit the potential damages of the informal economy. In this lecture Dr. Friedrich Schneider shares his knowledge regarding the informal economy and presents findings from recently conducted research on the Aruban informal economy.
