Slavery: past & Present in Aruba
Symposium Series
Our stories, our shared future
This lecture focuses on descendants of indigenous Indians and enslaved individuals. What are their stories, and how do they experience the legacy of slavery in their lives, communities, and environment? We also reflect on the stories of survivors of contemporary slavery, their struggle for freedom, and the challenges they still face daily. Come and listen!
On this small island, where we live with descendants of slave owners, enslaved individuals, indigenous Indians, and migrants from all corners of the world, the boundaries are often no longer easily delineated due to the continuous mixing of peoples over the ages. On this small island, there is also division regarding the history of slavery, its contemporary consequences, and the course we must chart for a shared future. What are the similarities, if any? And how do we collectively move towards a future that is not marked by division but by connection? Come and make your voice heard!
