Uniting Nature & People
As humans, we are part of nature, yet of all species on Earth, we have the most power to shape the environment around us. Although it may sometimes seem like our needs inevitably result in environmental destruction, there are many ways in which we can govern sustainable natural resource use and exploitation to the benefit of both people and nature. The goal of social-ecological systems science is to identify the ways in which we can foster sustainable use of natural resources by enhancing our understanding of the ever-changing interactions between people and nature. During this Center for Lifelong Learning talk, I will introduce some of the theories of social-ecological systems using examples of sustainable and unsustainable natural resource use on islands around the world. Simultaneously, I will provide an insight into what the students of the SISSTEM program have been learning during the social-ecological systems course this year, focusing on their group projects on social-ecological systems in Aruba.
